Jury quote:
‘The proposal Habitat: Limhamn combines a fine interpretation of the place’s industrial history with a unique and beautifully designed architecture which has good conditions to become an identity carrier for the whole of Limhamn. The elegant towers offer attractive housing and the architecture is placed in a lime-based green landscape for residents and visitors, rich in flora and fauna and with a preserved tall silo as a verdant exclamation mark.’
At Limhamn, the industrial infrastructure of harbour and silos heralds the creation of a new waterfront habitat for all species to dwell. One of the iconic concrete silos stands. Five are dismantled and reformed as public spaces and microclimates. Two new metal clad timber towers of unequal height are built beside it. Three hundred human residents call them home, other species, simply habitat. The three structures form a landmark marking Limhamnsunique contribution to Malmo’s waterfront transformation.
Built from low carbon CLT, they adopt the directness of the great industrial structures. Semi-circular balconies and wintergardens, clad in corrugated stainless steel are laced across the surface. Irrigation and planting create floating gardens with maritime views and air for residents and insects alike. The buildings rise in clusters punctuated by spaces for collective life in interiors and exterior landscapes at multiple levels. The August Palm public skybarbecomes the beacon of a socially and environmentally sustainable Malmo, overlooking the treelined harbour and topographic piazza of microclimates and multi species habitat for performance, swimming, walking, cycling, its green corridor connecting the northern beach with the southern coastal nature reserves.
